Soto Gake - Outside Foot Sweep

Use soto gake when you find yourself face-to-face with an attacker and don’t have position to execute the back throw (ura nage) with your back leg. Using your front leg gives you the element of surprise. By applying simultaneous pressure to the attacker’s upper body, you create a "scissors effect" that is sure to take him down. Here it is step-by-step.

Fighting stance (attacker on right). Shin block the attacker’s low roundhouse kick. Grab the attacker’s sleeve and hook his neck as you move forward to your left, turning 180 degrees.

Hook the attacker’s lead leg with your front leg while pushing back on his upper body Once he goes down, pull up on the attacker’s sleeve, while pinning his body with your shin. Finish off with a face punch.
