Welcome Enshin - Pimville, Soweto, South Africa!

The Enshin Karate Honbu (headquarters) would like to introduce and welcome one of the newest dojos in the ever-expanding Enshin family.

Sensei Joseph Mphilo

Sensei Joseph Mphilo is located in Pimville, Soweto, South Africa.

Sensei Joseph Mphilo was born 1975 in Pimville, Soweto. He started karate in 1988 with Sensei Vusi Mntambo, and was graded to Shodan in 1996. In 1999, he was graded to Nidan.

Sensei Joe is a keen competitor who has participated successfully in a number of championships. In 1994, he became the National Champion in the Enshin knockdown tournament. 1995 saw him achieving 2nd place at the Ashihara Karate championship held in Phiri hall, Soweto and was honored with the award for the best technical fighter. He also fought in the Open Full-contact tournament held in 1999, reaching the semi-finals, despite having to compete against opponents who were more than 20 kg heavier than himself. In the 2003 Gauteng Enshin Karate Tournament, he dazzled competitors and spectators alike by downing his opponents time after time with spectacular takedowns.

Since Sensei Vusi left Soweto to pursue his career in Newcastle in 2002, Sensei Joe has taken on the role of instructor at the Pimville and Molapo dojos, providing a dynamic and inspiring role-model for his students. He looks forward to receiving his official authorization by Kancho Ninomiya early 2004.

Sensei Joe works as a volunteer for the local emergency rescue team, and is qualified as a basic life support practitioner. He considers it his obligation to share his valuable knowledge and experience in this field with his students, since he believes that it is important for karateka to be educated in basic life skills.

Sensei Joe feels that Enshin Karate is more realistic than any other karate style, and is especially practical for street fighting. He recognizes in Enshin the old ways of what karate was originally meant for – jissen karate. He appreciates the concept behind Enshin, namely the spirit of togetherness, and the unlimited nature of the open circle: unfinished, flexible, and open to new techniques and ideas.

Best of luck and well wishes to Sensei Joseph and his students!
